About Ms. MacPherson
I grew up in Connecticut and graduated from the University of New England in Biddeford, ME. I have always known I wanted to teach and I absolutely love the profession ~ I can’t imagine doing anything else! I had an amazing two years of teaching in Maine, but being closer to family drew me to Boston this past summer. I also love being outdoors, traveling, spending time with friends and family, and curling up with a good book! I like to bake, although I’m still just learning, and I enjoy yoga to relax after a stressful school day! My favorite sports teams are all things Boston! I’m looking forward to beginning my third year of teaching, and my first here at South!
About Our Curriculum
Students have 5 core subjects in 5th grade: Math, Reading, Writing, Social Studies, and Science.
Below is an overview of each subject and a link to the curriculum document containing the reporting standards for each subject in grade 5.
Math: We will be continuing with the Envisions Math curriculum this year. A few of the major skills taught in 5th grade are decimal operations, adding and subtracting fractions, and long division.
Reading: Our Guided Reading program allows students to have some freedoms. Students are placed in guided reading groups that work one-on-one with the teacher and then have lots of time for independent reading with their own choice of books.
Writing: During writing we will focus on the writing process while using our writer’s notebooks. We will be focusing on narrative, research, and persuasive writing units this year.
Science: We will cover a number of new topics in Science this year in the Earth Sciences, Life Sciences, and Physical Sciences. We'll also touch on some engineering skills!
Social Studies: Ms. Pires across the hall will be teaching SS. Students will cover topics in American history from early America to the War of 1812 - a lot of information!
Hopefully, it will be an enriching year!
