Hello All,
I apologize for the delay in blog posts - things have been busy both at school and personally! That may be why its seems like March is flying by!
Announcements:
1) Tomorrow, Thursday, March 17th is "Wear Green Day" to celebrate the holiday.
2) Friday, March 18th is "Luau Day" so students can wear any Hawaiian themed clothing. That evening the PTO is holding a Luau party here at the South School.
3) There will be a Social Studies test on Thursday.
4) Term 2 ends on March 15th (today!) and report cards will be coming home in a few weeks.
5) Reminder, no school on Friday, March 25th (next week) for Good Friday.
Academic Updates:
Math: We have finished Topic 10 which focuses on adding and subtracting mixed numbers. We are "skipping" Topic 11 for a bit and will come back to it later in the year. We are covering Topic 12 on Volume first because it is an important part of PARC in April.
Reading: We are continuing Despereaux and we are on part 4. Ask your students about all of the interesting characters we are reading about! We are working on writing convincing arguments and being like "lawyers" for a persuasive open response. We will be beginning small reading groups later this week where we will be reading short texts as well as some longer books together.
Writing: We are beginning our work on Persuasive Writing! We are currently discussing the debate on whether or not students should be required to wear uniforms to school - ask your child which side they are on! As a class, we will be writing a model persuasive letter about this topic and then students will be writing their own letters on a topic they feel is important.
Science: We have wrapped up our life science studies, although we are still continuing our "mold experiment". You may have heard that we are trying to grow mold on bread - it's true! The bread is sealed tightly in baggies though! Many of our bread slices are growing some mold and we are observing each week. This experiment will be written up in lab report format over the next few weeks. In our regular studies, we are moving on to energy, electricity, and magnetism.
Hope all is well with families. I know the 6th Grade Showcase last night caused a bit of a buzz about moving onward, but all good things were heard here! Many students already know which clubs and activities they want to do next year!
