Hello All!
What a great Chorus concert Wednesday night! The kids did a wonderful job! I cannot believe we are 6 weeks out from the end of the year - WOW!
Announcements:
1. Band concert will be Tuesday, May 19th and dress rehearsal will be the evening of the 18th. A note should be coming home with specific information.
2. SBAC tests will be next week - Wednesday and Thursday. These will consume most of the day. Please make sure that your child gets a good night's sleep and eats an energizing breakfast. The 5th grade team is developing learning activities (to take place in a separate space) to extend our curriculum for any students who are opted out.
3. We will be going on a field trip Thursday, May 28th to Fort Western in Augusta! A beige colored permission slip should have gone home in your child's Friday folder this weekend! The cost for the trip is $8 - please contact me if this cost causes some difficulty for your family.
4. There will be a science test on Monday about electricity. Students have a study guide in their HW folders. Additionally, Ms. Barstow provided me with the following link to help students study at home: LINK HERE!
Academic Updates:
Math: We have started our area and volume project and the students are doing a great job with their geometry skills! They also have A LOT of great ideas about what kind of ice cream packaging (and flavor!) they want to design!
Reading: We have finished up our review of main idea and details. Now, we are beginning to focus on elements of a short story. This will tie in nicely with our next writing unit.
Writing: We are currently editing our persuasive letters. Students have great topics that they feel strongly about! Our next unit is going to be focused on writing historical fiction short stories, which we hope to illustrate and turn into eBooks! Our setting is going to be the Revolutionary War, and this will fit nicely with our Social Studies curriculum.
Social Studies: We are currently learning about the major events leading up to the revolutionary war. The Boston Massacre, Boston Tea Party, and tension regarding The Intolerable Acts are making it clear that the colonies want to separate from England! In the next few weeks, we will be covering the war, major battles, the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution! Our trip to Fort Western will be a great hands-on example of the time period we are studying!
Science: Students have a test on electricity this Monday! After this, they will wrap up the year with a unit on plants.
Hope all is well and families are enjoying the beautiful sunny weather this week brought!
Molly
