Hello Room 18 Families,
January has flown by and we have been working hard! Congratulations to the 5 students who were in our South 5th grade Spelling Bee today - Chloe, Grace, Dustin, Eli, and Vince. As one of the top 4 students in today's competition, Vince, Grace, and Eli will represent South in the town spelling bee in February. It will be airing on local TV, so stay tuned!!
Also, our class is very excited that we have raised enough money for the World Wildlife Fund to adopt our Clouded Leopard! Woohoo!! See the photo of our adorable animal below. Thanks to all who donated!
Announcements:
1. Early Release tomorrow: Thursday, January 28th for Parent Conferences. All parents should have received an email regarding conference times last week.
2. A notice will be going home on Friday regarding our Valentine's Day celebration.
Academics:
Math: Topic 8 Math tests from last week will go home tomorrow. We took Part 1 of the Topic 5-8 Math Benchmark today and will finish Part 2 on Thursday. On Friday, we will start Topic 9 - Adding and Subtracting Fractions! The next few months will be fraction focused, as fractions is one of the big math goals in 5th grade!
Reading: We are making our way through Tale of Despereaux. Students are enjoying the text and we have already discussed many of the themes such as being yourself and conformity. Ask your student about Despereaux's conformity! We have been practicing how to craft strong open responses using evidence, but this week we wrote a fun, creative journal entry.
Writing: Biome articles will be printed on Friday!! Student will brainstorm in class what they would like to do for their presentation. Presentation work will be due the week before February Break. More information will be on the Project Guidelines sheet which will go home Friday - it will be on colored paper! I will post the guidelines on the blog as well.
Science: We are working on our life science unit. We have discussed classifying animals with a dichotomous key and have learned about inherited traits and learned traits. Many students were excited to learn about some of their inherited traits. WE are working this week on animal life cycles, and will be beginning a mold experiment (all mold will be contained in taped baggies!) where we will test different organism living conditions. Eventually, students will be writing a full lab report.
I look forward to seeing parents this week at conferences. Please come with any questions you have prepared so we can make the best use of the short time that is allotted!
Enjoy the unseasonable weather this week/weekend! :)
