I hope everyone is enjoying a bit of rest and relaxation as April Vacation is beginning! I am enjoying the sunshine in South Carolina this week visiting family!
Reminders:
1. Tuesday 4/28 and Wednesday 4/29 students will be taking the NWEAs. We use this data within the schools to determine student growth over the course of the year. Make sure your child gets a good night's sleep and eats an energizing breakfast o those days!
2. The Chorus concert will be Wednesday, May 6th! A yellow notice will come home next Monday will specific details on what time your child needs to arrive. They have been working very hard!
3. The SBAC tests will be 5/13 and 5/14 in 5th grade. The practice went well last week and I think many students felt much more at ease after practicing.
4. Band concert will be May 19th. More info will be coming home with specifics.
Academic Updates:
Math: We completed Unit 10 on algebra and coordinate graphing from Unit 9 right before break. These assessments will come home after break. When we return from break we will be doing a large project-based learning unit. Students will be working with partners to design a cost-effective ice cream container for a company. Within this project students will be learning area, surface area, volume, and capacity. Hopefully it will be fun way to change the pace in Math as the year winds down!
Reading: We finished our Sharon Creech book clubs right before break and we are excited to meet Sharon Creech on May 12th! The class has lost of great questions for her! After break we will be working on some important reading comprehension skills, such as main idea and details, literary elements, and nonfiction text structure.
Writing: In writing we have been researching our persuasive essay topics. We hope to turn our essays into letter that can be sent to real people in the community! Topics include longer recess, animal rights, more school sports teams, more PE class, and no homework! The students have done a lot of great research and have written rough drafts. After break we will work on final drafts.
Social Studies: Students have been working hard to research one of the 13 colonies and create a brochure advertising it! They have done some great work and were just about finished right before break. Some students may need to stay for HW club next week to finish up. We will be moving into the Revolutionary War to finish off the year - a unit filled with lots of fun activities and a trip to Fort Western in Augusta at the end of May!
Enjoy the rest of your week, in Maine or traveling!
Molly
