Hello!
Happy Spring! Things are going very well in 5th grade!
Announcements:
1) There will be a Math test on Friday - Multiplying and Dividing Fractions. A practice test will go home Thursday night for HW.
2) April Vacation is next week April 18-22.
Important: The PARCC ELA assessments will be April 26, 27,and 28, after break. At home, you can be a HUGE help for your child by helping them get a good night's sleep, eat a healthy and filling breakfast, and pack a nutritious snack.
Academic Updates:
Math: We are wrapping up Topic 11 on multiplying and dividing fractions this week. After break, we will review all of the math we have learned this year in preparation for the math PARCC in the beginning of May. Homework during that time will include review work.
Reading: We have started reading a new class novel, HOOT by Carl Hiaasen. Ask your child about what we have read so far. There will be reading homework 2/3 nights a week and students are expected to keep up with reading. In preparation for ELA PARCC, we have also been working on writing thoughtful open responses and analyzing texts. We will be doing practice PARCC assessments this week and Monday after break.
Writing: In writing, we are working on researching our persuasive topics. Each student has chosen a different topic that they care about. Our class is full of persuasive kids, so I have high expectations for our persuasive letters!
Science: We have completed our unit on types of energy and are wrapping up our lab reports on our life science mold experiment - it was getting very gross! :) Our next focus will be reviewing simple machines and reviewing for the science MCAS in May. Students have had reading and questions each week in March and this will continue this month and next until MCAS. This reading is a fantastic review of topics on the MCAS test.
I hope students and families have a relaxing and refreshing school break next week!
Ms. MacPherson
