Hello!
Happy New Year! Hope families had a relaxing Winter Break.
Announcements:
1) Conferences will be on Thursday, January 28th from 12:30 - 5:00. Look for an email regarding your conference time in the coming weeks. With last conferences being so crazy, I thought it best to ask for preferred times again. A blue form went home on Friday!
2) The 28th is an Early Release day!
3) No school Monday, January 18th for MLK Jr. Day.
Academic Updates:
Math: Last week we began Topic 8. This topic focuses on algebra concepts including variables, order of operations, and function tables. The students have already spent many days practicing the order of operations! Topic 8 will likely finish at the end of next week.
Reading: We have begun reading Tale of Despereaux, by Kate DiCamillo, during Walk to Read. We are staying as a homeroom in WTR during this novel. We will be practicing writing strong responses that cite evidence and thinking critically about what we are reading. Last week we debated whether or not the mouse mother in the story was a good mother - ask your child what they wrote and what their evidence was!
Writing: We are finishing up our biome essays this week with a conclusion and will spend a few classes revising and proofreading. Students have become biome experts in the past few weeks! There will be a project and presentation component which will be done mostly at home within the next few weeks. Students will have ample time to brainstorm in class and will have many choices for presenting their work.
Science: Last week we wrapped up our weather unit! We will be moving on to a life science unit that covers animal classification, adaptations, and food chains. This will likely continue until February Break.
As always, email with any questions or concerns along the way!
Molly
