Hello!
Hope you're all ready to enjoy a long weekend! We've been working hard here in Room 25 and I'm sure the students are ready for a break!
Reminder: No School Friday, Oct. 10th and Monday, Oct. 13th!!
I spoke with students this week about our 5th grade behavior notice system. If an incident occurs, students will get a behavior notice from the teacher. The teacher will write on the notice explaining the issue and students will need to fill out the reflection portion about how they could be making a better choice in the future. This notice gets signed by the teacher, parent, and student as an agreement to work on improving certain behaviors. We haven't needed these yet, and hopefully we don't, but they are the next step before a restorative circle (our school policy).
Here's what we've been working on:
Math: We took our Unit 2 Assessment this week. Most students will be taking the retest. I have plans to work with small groups next week on each skill so that students can get the extra help they need. I have also included links on my Math page to the Khan Academy videos that review the skills in this unit as another option for reviewing for the retest. Retest request forms are in students' Homework Folders and tests will come home in this week's Friday Folder. PLEASE MAKE SURE TO SEND THE TEST BACK. It helps me to see exactly where their mistakes are as we review.
Reading: We have begun working on making connections with the books we are reading. We will continue this next week and work on adding a direct quote to our reading responses to support our ideas - tough stuff!
Writing: We are continuing to wrap up our narratives. We are making final revisions today and Tuesday, and we'll be sharing next week. Keep in mind with scores that our outcomes are END OF THE YEAR outcomes and a 2 or 1 is alright now as students are not expected to be getting 3's on everything just yet! We will keep working at these skills all year. We will begin writing fiction stories next which will be lots of fun!
Social Studies: We are finishing our unit on culture by watching a presentation with Salva Dut and Linda Sue Park, author of A Long Walk to Water today. I'll add the link to the Social Studies page in case you'd like to see it as well! Students are taking a Check-In Assessment on what we've discussed with culture that will come home soon. We will begin our study of Early America next week.
Science: Students are beginning a pendulum unit that focuses on scientific processes.
Hope all are enjoying this beautiful fall weather and have wonderful long weekend!
Ms. M
