Hi All!
What a CRAZY few weeks - it's been like an extra February vacation before vacation! We've tried to get through our work, but its been very hectic. Hopefully the snow next week stays to a minimum and we can get a full week in! We'll see...
Next week is Spirit Week! The week will be packed with super fun activities and games where each grade level competes, including a dress-up event each day. Dress-up Days are as follows:
Monday: Clash Day (polka dots/plaid/stripes/ etc)
Tuesday: Twin Day
Wednesday: Wacky Hair
Thursday: Maine Day
Friday: Class Color (Wear Blue!)
After School Spirit Week activities you child may want to join:
Monday: Staff vs 8th grade basketball game (5th graders can watch) 2:30-3:30
Tuesday: 5th grade intramurals 2:15 - 3:00
Wednesday: All grades intramurals 2:15 - 3:00
Thursday: Team Omnikin - 4 students per team - sign up in office.
Games and activities throughout the week include a recycled art contest, poster contest, Penny Wars, Healthy Food Drive, Bottle Drive (no alcohol bottles please), and a HUGE assembly at the end of the week with tons of fun competitions! Should be a spirit-filled week to kick off Feb. break! Any donations (healthy food, pennies, or bottles) are greatly appreciated! Bottle drive benefits Japan Exchange Program, Food Drive & Penny donations will go to local food pantry.
Academic Updates:
Math: We have done a lot of work with fractions lately, but we will be taking a break for Unit 7 where we will dive into Order of Operations, Exponents, and Negative Numbers. We started Unit 7 this week (and didn't get too far) so we will continue this Unit of Study throughout February.
Reading: We have started our Book Clubs! All of these snow days have made it tricky to stick to a regular schedule but the class has been great about getting their work done. All Book Clubs are reading a mystery novel. Our Book Club format includes reading specified pages and completing a Role Sheet to reflect on the reading before the next book Club meeting. Students will be assessed on our Speaking and Listening - Comprehension & Collaboration standards during this time.
**Because of the snow days Book Club HW is due MONDAY!
Writing: Over the past few weeks students have written articles about something they know a lot about. Many topics include sports, pets, and Maine. The articles are finished and we are sharing with Ms. Barstow's class today. The articles look fantastic as we put lots of finishing touches and text features to help the reader! These should be coming home with scores next week.
Social Studies: We are wrapping up our study of Exploration. Student have created iMovie Trailers using pictures and text about a famous explorer. The students have been working hard, and the trailers look great. Students will upload them to their google docs - so ask your child to show you their trailer at home! I will post a few to the blog as well next week! Our last study in this unit will cover the controversy surrounding Columbus.
Also, we've been presenting Schooner projects - the class has done a great job researching and presenting. This assignment was a fun chance for students to practice research and presentation skills and will not be graded. Photos from this week's presentations are below!
Hope everyone has a warm and enjoyable weekend! Fingers crossed that next week's storm passes with only a few flakes.
