Hi All,
Hope things are well and the snow keeps melting! We are looking forward to a 5-day week, finally!
Reminders:
A permission slip went home in last week's Friday folder for a chorus field trip to the Camden Opera House on March 27th to watch a performance by the Bay Chamber Choir. Students will be walking from school that morning. Please return the permission slip by March 20th!
Trimester 2 ends on March 12th. Report cards will come home the week after, but you can continue to check scores through Jumprope whenever you choose!
There is no school next Friday, March 13th for teacher workshops.
Academic Updates:
Math: We have recently completed our work with order of operations and line graphs and we are finishing Unit 7 with negative numbers this week. This is a tricky one, but the concept is just introduced in 5th grade to prepare for heavy work on it next year. Unit 8 will start Monday. Links on the Math page of the blog are always helpful! Keep studying those math facts, too!
Reading: We finished our mystery book clubs right after February break and are beginning a unit on poetry and figurative language. Students will get to use their creativity to write their own poems over the next few weeks, which should be lots of fun!
Writing: We have finished writing our animal adaptation nonfiction articles and I have really enjoyed reading all of them! The students did some great research! I have marked up the articles with comments and spelling/grammar proofreading and we will be working this week on an extra step of editing. Students will print new copies of their stories and all of these will come home in Friday Folders this week.
Social Studies: We have completed our study of exploration and are moving on to the colonization of America. Students have a great understanding of why the Age of Exploration was important to our history! We will be learning about two of the first settlements (Jamestown, Plymouth) and also about the mysterious happenings in the settlement of Roanoke. We will follow this with a research project on the 13 colonies.
Science: In science students are adding pictures and voice to create a podcast using their animal adaptation research.
Let's all hope the temps start to rise and this snow lets up for good!
