Hello!
We are excited to be nearing the end of testing. Today we finished our Math testing and we just have Science MCAS left on Friday!!
Announcements:
1)There will be a Topic 13 Math test on MONDAY.
2) Be on the lookout for a calendar and checklist of events in June. This will be sent home at the end of the month. We have lots of 5th grade events and want all students to be prepared each day.
3) Chorus/Band concert will be part of Fine Arts night on Wednesday, June 1st.
4) Please remember to send in the two permission slips. One is for our trip to Boston and the other is for our middle school visit.
5) Also remember to send in your child's baby pictures. We need a baby picture, a kindergarten (or close) picture and a current 5th grade picture. This will be used for the DVD slideshow at the Moving on Ceremony. The ceremony will be June 22nd at 10AM.
Academics:
Math: We have had limited math classes because of the Math PARCC testing. However, in between testing we have been working on Topic 13 which focuses on converting measurements. We are wrapping up the topic this week and will have a test Monday.
In addition, we took the Topic 12 test back before April break, but I felt that students were still working on the concept and we continued to review in the weeks before PARCC. There will be a re-do of this test coming up as well.
Reading: We finished reading Hoot and it seemed like the students really enjoyed the text. The story is focused on the environmental issue of conservation and we had great discussion while reading about this issue. We have started reading our last novel Bud, Not Buddy which takes place during the Great Depression. We have been learning about this time period - don't be surprised if students come home asking if you have invested in the stock market! This book will be one of the choices for our Battle of the Books competition in June.
Writing: We are finishing up our research and will be writing our persuasive letters over the next week or two. We are working on including persuasive facts and evidence as well as our own thinking in our information paragraphs.
Science: We have spent some time the past two weeks reviewing for MCAS by doing practice tests and playing a big Jeopardy game. Next week we will begin an experiment to continue to practice using our observation and data collecting skills.
Have a great month of May!
Ms. MacPherson
