Hi Everyone,
It feels like we've been in 5th grade together for months already, but it was certainly a great 3rd week! We had an awesome schooner trip last Friday. Check out the pictures below!
Important Announcements:
1. We have another field trip coming up next Friday, Sept. 19th. IMPORTANT: THE TIME HAS CHANGED DUE TO THE TIDE. A NOTICE WILL BE COMING HOME TODAY! We will be walking to Laite beach to participate in coastal clean-up week. We will be picking up any trash we find to help keep our beaches clean! We need parent volunteers as well! More info can be found on the permission slip in last week's Friday Folder.
2. Band rental night is this week on Sept 17th at 6:30pm! A letter went home last week. If you think buying/renting an instrument is not an option, your child can still be in band - talk to Craig Ouellette the band director!
Academic Updates:
Math: We are wrapping up Unit 1 (Number Theory) this week. Our Assessment will be on Wednesday. Monday will be a day of review. WE will not have Math class on Tuesday. Students should be bringing home their vocabulary (which DOES NOT need to be memorized but is often helpful when studying), a study guide that is VERY similar to the actual assessment, and their math HW from the unit. We will talk about ways to study on Monday in class, such as going over the problems you missed on the homework, working through the study guide, asking a family member to create a problem for you, etc. After this, we will move on to Unit 2 - Estimation and Computation.
Reading: We are continuing to work on our independent reading skills and are beginning to use stickies while we are reading to highlight important information. Meanwhile, I am assessing students to find a baseline reading level to work from this year. We are reading The City of Ember as a class, a fantasy book that is getting increasingly more mysterious as we read. Yesterday we had lots of questions about the book going forward!
Writing: We have been working on lots of rough drafts of powerful story ideas. This week we will choose one idea to write about and create a second and third draft! Feel free to help your child decide this weekend what powerful story idea they want to write about.
Social Studies: We are continuing our work with cultural universals. We began reading A Long Walk to Water. The students were captivated by the stories of Salva, a Lost Boy of Sudan and Nya, a young girl who walks for hours each morning and afternoon for water for her family. Ask your student about this book - we've already had some GREAT discussions about cultural conflict and cultures different from ours.
