Hello Families,
We have been working hard in Room 18 over the past few weeks and it has been a fantastic start to the year! I've really enjoyed getting to know each student. Throughout the year, I like to post a weekly blog with upcoming events and updates on what we are working on in class. Often, these updates will include some photos of what's been going on! If you have not already, you can subscribe on the right side by entering your email and the post will be sent directly to you.
This week's events:
Monday - we have P.E. (finally!) - wear sneakers!
Monday - Math Assessment on Place Value!
Wednesday 9/23 - No School for Yom Kippur.
I also really enjoyed meeting parents at Back to School Night. Although we did not present a formal slideshow, I've attached a PDF version of the slides at the end of the post! Please let me know if you have any questions about our curriculum.
Academic Updates:
Math: We have completed Topic 1 on Place Value with whole numbers and decimals. Some of this topic was review from previous years, and other parts were new. The Math page on the blog has some games and practice questions that could be used to help your student study!
Additionally, you may have heard about Sumdog from your student! Students have account log in information taped in the front cover of their agenda. This website allows students to create an avatar, and play math games to earn coins to buy new clothes and accessories. Students can play against other students in our class, or students around the nation. Only first names are displayed on this site. Students LOVE playing Sumdog, and many have already tried playing at home - which they are welcome to do! One thing I love, is that I can change the questions students are working on so that they reinforce skills we are learning in class!
Reading: In reading we are working on identifying book genres and building our independent reading skills. Next week we will begin reading Number the Stars, a novel about a girl living through the Holocaust. This novel will likely bring up some wonderful discussion topics as we talk about historical events and what we can learn from them. If students have reading from the novel for Homework, that can count as their 20 minutes of reading for the night!
Writing: We have begun the year talking about what we already know about good writing and working on adding as much description as possible to our writing. Our goal is that the reader can picture the story in their mind from our writing. We are also working on our writing stamina and getting our ideas out on the page. The first major piece of writing we will publish will be a narrative writing piece.
Science: We began the year by organizing our new science notebooks and conducting an introductory experiment with gummy bears in order to learn how to make a hypothesis, collect observations, and draw conclusions. This past week we began our first unit about Earth and Space. We are beginning the unit with research about the solar system and students will make a poster about one of our planets.
Hope the start of the year is going well! As always, feel free to email with any questions!
Molly
