Hello!
We've made it through our second week - it certainly felt like a full week here in 5th grade. We've spent some time getting to know each other and we've also begun diving into our studies this year. Here is an update:
Math: We have begun the first Everyday Math unit, and we're doing well. Many of the things we have done this week have been review, such as arrays and factors. We had lots of fun playing factor captor with friends!
Reading: We have spent lots of time talking about and working on our independent reading stamina. We are getting better each day. It would be GREAT if your child had a reading book that they were really in to. Unfortunately, our librarian has been sick in the hospital and we haven't had a chance to use the school library to pick out books. If your child doesn't have a book they are enjoying, a trip to the public library may be a great idea.
Writing: We are beginning our narrative writing with brainstorming topics to write about and trying to use all of the strategies we know about good writing. Today's lesson was focused on writing in the moment, and it's really helped us so far. We will continue learning strategies for powerful writing next week.
Social Studies: We have begun talking about cultural universals - things ALL cultures have uncommon, such as shelter, language, or food. We will continue these conversations next week and begin reading A Long Walk to Water to compare our culture to another.
