Hello All!
We had a very busy week last week to get us into the New Year. We had the Steiners (UMaine's a cappella group) as well as our Japanese exchange students. A definite highlight of the week was when the students came to 5th grade to teach us about calligraphy. Pictures below!
This past week finds us just as busy - January is flying by. Here are some updates! Remember, no school Monday Jan 19th for MLK Jr Day.
Math: In Math we are wrapping up Unit 5. A majority of this unit focuses on circle graphs and an introduction to fractions. Our Unit 5 Assessment was Wednesday and Thursday. We will continue our study of fractions in the next unit.
Reading: We are continuing to read The Birchbark House, which ties nicely with our SS work on Native Americans and Explorers. We are working on asking deeper questions while we read and making predictions. We are also preparing ourselves for Literature circles, which will begin in a week or two. I can't wait to start - they are certainly my favorite way to dive into books and have a good discussion.
Writing: We are working on nonfiction writing. We are beginning this unit with an informative essay about something we already know a lot about, such as a sport, hobby, or place. We will continue this work with a science piece about animal adaptations.
Social Studies: We have finished our work with Native Americans and are moving into the Age of Exploration. Each student will briefly study an explorer and create an iMovie trailer about his life. The students are very excited about this project, and it should be lots of fun! I plan to share some to the blog so you can see their hard work.
Science: In Science students are working on an adaptations unit. They will do in-depth research in the library about an animal's adaptations and in Writing we will write an informative essay about them. After this, students will record a podcast to present what they've learned. I hope to share these as well!
Things are going well here in 5th grade - can't believe it's already 2015! They're on their way to 6th grade already! Yikes!
Stay warm!
Molly
