Hello All!
What a strange week it's been!
Announcements:
1. There will be no school on Tuesday, November 11th for Veteran's Day.
2. Picture retake day will be this Monday, November 10th.
3. The Book Fair will start Monday and run all next week.
4. Conference Make-Ups will be scheduled for December - stay tuned!
5. There will be a Science Test on Wednesday (Nov 12) next week. Ms. Barstow will help students brainstorm some tips for studying at home.
5. I did not send home Friday Folders again with the crazy week (unless your child wasn't here last Friday).
Here's what we're been up to the past few weeks:
Math: We have begun Unit 4, which focuses primarily on division concepts. We have also begun our multiplication quizzes. The goal in 5th grade is to complete 100 problems in 3 minutes. The first quiz from last week will come home in a Friday Folder soon. WE will try to have one each week, and HW will be to study math facts! Math facts are such a crucial part of everything we do in Math.
We've talked about how you could study and come up with some ideas:
-online games (there are some in the Math section)
-quiz from someone at home
-flash cards
Reading: We have been working on summarizing using a main idea and details - a big 5th grad standard! We will continue this work, and then read a class novel, Birchbark House, which ties into our Social Studies work perfectly.
Writing: We have written our rough drafts of our fiction narratives - some are very lengthy and creative! We will revise and edit in the next weeks, and hopefully publish before Thanksgiving break!
Social Studies: We are working on learning about the concepts of human migration to Early America. Next week we will be moving into studying Native Americans and our Native American research project will begin right before Thanksgiving!
Hope all are finally warm and calm after the craziness!
